§ 62-20. Duties of the chief of police.

  • The chief of police shall have the following duties:

    (1)

    Be responsible within the city limits for the enforcement of state laws and city ordinances, protection of life and property, preservation of law and order, investigation of crimes, suppression of vice, and traffic control and enforcement;

    (2)

    Supervise and direct the police of the city, direct the assignment of police officers, establish training programs, and recommend retention, discipline and promotion of officers;

    (3)

    Manage and supervise the jail and the prisoners therein, and be responsible for the custody of city prisoners;

    (4)

    Serve or cause to be served all writs and processes issued by the municipal judge;

    (5)

    Keep full and accurate records of all arrests made by him or the police of the city, showing the name of each person arrested, the date of arrest, and the nature of the charge upon which the arrest was made;

    (6)

    Record and preserve the name of each person committed to the jail, the nature of the charge or process under which such imprisonment is made, the length and term of such imprisonment and why release was made;

    (7)

    Accept and safeguard bail bond as set by proper authorities; and

    (8)

    Take charge of, preserve and account for all property of the city used in connection with the police department and all other property of other owners which shall be entrusted to his care or come into his possession.
